According to the CDC, it is estimated that more than half of antibiotics are unnecessarily prescribed to children in doctor office settings for colds, most of which are caused by viruses. Overuse of antibiotics is a cause of antibiotic-resistant infections.

It is important to make sure you or your sick child/family member is getting the best possible care, which might not include an antibiotic.

Ask these questions:

  • What is the best treatment for my child’s illness?
  • Is this the right antibiotic for the type of infection my child has?
  • What can I do to help my child feel better?

Remember that rest, fluids, and over-the-counter products may be the best treatments for symptoms associated with viral infections. Talk with your healthcare professional about the best treatment for your or your child’s illness.
