As a physician treating babies and children, I find it is increasingly important to keep parents well informed about steps they can take to decrease the chance of sleep related infant deaths, including SIDS.

The medical community has been advising parents to put infants under age 1 to sleep on their backs in a crib, or other protected firm surface. Now, the American Association of Pediatrics has added that SIDS can be decreased by 50% by room sharing with the parent until 6-12 months of age.
